Kohunlich

This experience begins when we depart from the hotel and ride on our bicycles 2km until we reach the archaeological zone. Kohunlich is the most important archaeological site of this region. You will be able to climb some of the most representative pyramids, including “Los Mascarones”, where you will have a better view of the ruins and of the Mayan jungle.

The name Kohunlich is the mayan adaptation of Cohoon Ridge as was known by the English colonies of the 18th Century, and originates from the abundance of Cahoon trees (Orbignya Cohune) that grow in the region.

Kohunlich is currently considered one of the most important Mayan cities of the lower Peten. The buildings’ style clearly reflects the influence of the structures found at the shore of The Bec River (north of the Yucatan Peninsula) and on those in Guatemala’s southern region. There is also evidence of some kind of historic link with the Copan ruins in Honduras.

The most important archaeological sites are: the Temple of the Sun, with its enormous 5 feet masks, which represent the god of the “Young Sun”; Kinch Ahau, the Ball Field, Palace of the Stelas and the Acropolis.

The grand diversity of trees (copal, rubber, gum, pepper and ceiba) in combination with a great variety of animals (deer, armadillos, foxes, howling monkeys, small mammals, parrots, toucans and many others) make of Kohunlich a magical, exotic and refreshing place.

Dzibanche

We will explore the archaeological site by visiting the Temple of Lintels (Templo de los Dinteles) and the Temple of the Owl (Templo del Búho). A walk of approximately one and a half hour. We will interpret the local flora and fauna.

Considered the most important Mayan city within the state of Quintana Roo. Dizibanché once housed 40 thousand inhabitants during the classic period. There is solid evidence about Kinichná being its satellite city, and Kohunlich paying tribute to this great metropolis.

Kinichná owes its name to a VII Century wooden lintel covered with glyphs that shows signs of Teotihuacan influence within the central part of the region. A cultural wonder surrounded by jungle.

Located 20 miles from the hotel, you can visit this interesting archaeological site by car, bike or simply walking and enjoying the adventure and the thousands of buildings still buried in the jungle.

Chichan-Há

We will visit a forest reserve in the Ejido de Caobas, intending to find the vestiges of a 16th Century Franciscan Convent. An excellent opportunity to explore the flora and fauna of its jungle. Ideal for biking an 8km trail.

Journey back in time and discover Chichan-Há, one of the few colonial places that subsist in Quintana Roo State. It was once a Franciscan Mission where the Mayas turned to for shelter during war periods. It is also one of the most important sustainable forest exploration projects in Latin America.

Peaceful Mayan inhabitants, under missionary compliance, built this interesting site. Dissidents from Bacalar and Chetumal later made an attack on Chichan-Há, destroying its buildings and killing almost all the population.

The jungle reveals something fascinating and mysterious when innumerable candles are lit as an offering over the human remains found by hunters and gum trees workers of the region.

Visit and get to know one of Mexico’s most successful wood exploitation projects. A mountain bike is the perfect means of transportation to live this adventure.
